Hope Youth Enrichment Program (HYEP - "Hype!") - The After School Program

The Hope Youth Enrichment Program is a comprehensive, community-based mentoring and tutoring program for boys and girls living in the impoverished, primarily African-American community of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. Most participants are children who are deemed at-risk because of economic, behavioral, and/or academic deficiencies. Many are referred by local schools (Kelly Elementary School and Turner Elementary School) and community-based organizations, while others are walk-ins from the community.

The Hope Youth Enrichment Program operates from August to June each year. It is hosted by Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, located at 1511 Swissvale Ave., and the program runs Monday though Friday,  3:00-7:00 p.m. to boys and girls grades K-8.

This innovative program is an academic and social support program that provides children safe and productive out-of-school time activities, homework help, and computer-based tutoring, as well as social supports and life skills. Children are also provided a healthy after-school snack each day.

The Hope Youth Enrichment Program targets this at-risk population in order to prevent the development of antisocial behavior and academic failure and do intervention where such problems have already impacted the children. The program begins with an orientation, which includes complete academic and behavioral assessment and testing. Along with person-to-person tutoring, the academic part of the program uses the renowned Khan Academy learning platform coupled with computer-based instruction. All mentors are screened and trained by way of our cooperation with the Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Families of Hope

Families in Focus

On the 4th Thursday of each month, HOPE and its community partners celebrate the family by hosting a Families of Hope Event that includes a nutritious meal, fun family activities, and distribution of donated school supplies. Many of HOPE's children often are without the basic school supplies of paper, pencil, crayons, etc., that are often required to complete their homework. These events provide an opportunity to give each family some basic supplies in support of their child’s academic engagement, provide a meal to combat hunger, and model positive family activities.

The community response continues to be extremely positive, as families come together to rebuild and reunite a network of love, family, and a positive future! See our Events and News blog for news on past and upcoming Families of Hope events.

Bridge of Hope Community Gatherings

Bringing the Community Together

Western Pennsylvania Community of Hope has developed a one-of-a-kind approach to organizing and cultivating our community, which we call our Bridge of Hope Community Gatherings. These events are intergenerational themed gatherings that bring together children, families, and community elders in order to provide some community service, investigate some community need, or celebrate some community point of pride, such as student success, veterans, or grandparents. See our Events and News blog for reports on upcoming or past Bridge of Hope Community Gatherings.
